Root canal treatment
A tooth root contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. If this tissue becomes inflamed, root canal treatment is necessary. Inflammation can be caused by a cavity, a leaking filling, or damage to a tooth. During root canal treatment, the inflamed tissue is removed.
Symptoms of inflammation in the root canal
- Hypersensitivity when eating and drinking cold and hot drinks
- Pain when chewing
- A constant throbbing pain in the tooth
- Swelling and fever
De behandeling
The dentist examines the inflammation by looking in the mouth and with the help of X-rays. During the treatment, after the anesthesia, an opening is made on top of the tooth. The dentist then places a rubber dam (rubber sheet) so that the tooth remains free of saliva. Then, he removes the inflamed tissue with a special file. After rinsing with a disinfectant solution, the opening is filled again.
Acute pijnklacht
As a complete root canal treatment is usually extensive and takes a lot of time, it cannot always be scheduled immediately. To relieve the pain as quickly as possible, you may be eligible for an emergency appointment, during which most of the root canal system is cleaned. A temporary filling then ensures that the tooth is closed again. This phase is also called the ‘endo-start’. The treatment is then completed at a subsequent appointment, as with a standard root canal treatment.

In some cases, the treatment is fully or partially reimbursed. This depends on the policy and the health insurer. Root canal treatment is not included in the basic insurance. We therefore recommend that you first contact your health insurer so that you know whether you are entitled to reimbursement.
