Crowns and Bridges

What is a crown?

The crown is the visible part of your tooth in the mouth. When it is damaged and a filling is no longer sufficient, you can opt for a crown made of metal and/or porcelain as a durable replacement. This is glued over the tooth like a cap. Placing a crown requires more work than placing a filling. This requires several appointments.

Crowns can be made of different materials. The dentist will advise you on this so that you can come to the best choice together.

What is a bridge?

A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth and one or more crowns. With this, the dentist can replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge is anchored to one or more adjacent natural teeth. The bridge ‘bridges’ the empty space where the tooth is missing.

When is a crown/bridge needed?

Placing a crown is necessary when a filling is no longer sufficient. This may be the case when the tooth decay is too extensive, when there is too great a risk of breakage with a maximally filled tooth, or in the event of serious damage. A crown may also be necessary after a root canal treatment. A bridge may be necessary to restore chewing function, to fill spaces so that teeth do not shift, and it may have aesthetic reasons.
