What is a crown?
The crown is the visible part of your tooth in the mouth. When it is damaged and a filling is no longer sufficient, you can opt for a crown made of metal and/or porcelain as a durable replacement. This is glued over the tooth like a cap. Placing a crown requires more work than placing a filling. This requires several appointments.
Crowns can be made of different materials. The dentist will advise you on this so that you can come to the best choice together.

What is a bridge?
A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth and one or more crowns. With this, the dentist can replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge is anchored to one or more adjacent natural teeth. The bridge ‘bridges’ the empty space where the tooth is missing.

When is a crown/bridge needed?
Placing a crown is necessary when a filling is no longer sufficient. This may be the case when the tooth decay is too extensive, when there is too great a risk of breakage with a maximally filled tooth, or in the event of serious damage. A crown may also be necessary after a root canal treatment. A bridge may be necessary to restore chewing function, to fill spaces so that teeth do not shift, and it may have aesthetic reasons.
Risico’s van een kroon of brug
There are virtually no risks associated with placing a crown or bridge. However, the place where the tooth is placed may be somewhat sensitive temporarily. If other risks arise, the dentist will inform you about them.
Zijn er alternatieven voor een kroon of brug?
There are no alternatives to a crown. Without a crown, you run the risk of losing the tooth. Instead of a bridge, you can opt for an implant, a frame prosthesis, or a partial prosthesis.
Wat kost een kroon of brug?
The costs of a crown or bridge depend on the material, the treatment, the degree of difficulty, the technical costs, and any pre-treatments. You can view the price list on the website. Of course, we would be happy to make a budget for you for a precise estimate.
Wordt een kroon vergoed?
For adults, crowns and bridges are not included in the basic package. If you have additional insurance, a large part of the costs is often reimbursed.
Hoe wordt een kroon/brug geplaatst?
Replacing a tooth with a crown or bridge usually requires two or three appointments. The crown or bridge is not made in the practice but in a dental laboratory.
- Grinding the tooth
During the first appointment, your tooth is ground down. This is necessary to create sufficient space for the crown or bridge. The dentist often uses a local anesthetic for this.
- Making an impression
After grinding the tooth, the dentist makes an impression. Then, together with the dentist, you determine which color the crown or bridge should be, based on a few samples. In addition, your bite is checked. This is necessary to determine the correct height of the crown or bridge. Thanks to the color and bite determination, the crown or bridge fits functionally and cosmetically with the rest of your teeth.
- Temporary provision
For your comfort and to protect the ground tooth, the dentist will place a temporary provision until the next appointment. To prevent it from coming loose, it is important not to eat hard or sticky products. If the temporary provision does come loose, it is wise to contact the dentist.
- Customizing the crown or bridge
The dentist delivers both the impression and the information about the color and bite to the dental laboratory. With the help of a plaster cast of the impression, a model of your teeth is made here. The crown or bridge is then made based on this.
- Securing the crown or bridge
During the last appointment, the dentist starts by removing the temporary provision and fitting the crown or bridge. When everything fits well, a layer of cement is applied to the inside of the crown or bridge elements. Then the crown or bridge element is slid over the tooth and pressed firmly.
