General dentistry includes dental treatments that restore and prevent pain in the teeth. This includes biannual check-up appointments, filling cavities, or a root canal treatment.
The importance of your check-up appointment
Regular dental check-ups can help you keep your teeth healthy. Healthy teeth are important for your self-confidence and your overall health. Unhealthy teeth can lead to pain and infections in other parts of the body. We therefore recommend that you visit the dentist twice a year for a check-up.
During this periodic check-up, we don’t just look for cavities. The dentist also checks the condition of the gums and takes X-rays when necessary. In addition, attention is paid to identifying any risk factors that may lead to (oral) health problems in the future. Together, we will make a plan to keep your teeth healthy for as long as possible.
Oral health and general health
Research shows that general health and oral health are strongly linked. With many conditions, the first symptoms develop in the mouth, for example in the form of small wounds, inflammation or a fungus. During the periodic check-ups, the dentist pays attention to these symptoms and, if necessary, refers patients to a specialist.
Some conditions in the mouth can also cause problems in the rest of the body. It is therefore important to keep your oral health as optimal as possible through good oral care and regular check-ups with your dentist. Prevention is better than cure.
Bacteria can enter the bloodstream from the mouth and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. During pregnancy, poor oral health can increase the risk of premature birth. Oral health also plays a major role in diabetes. For example, poor oral health can mean that blood sugar levels are not under control, and an unregulated diabetic patient may suffer from inflammation in the mouth.
